MALLARD LANDING RESIDENTS HONORED

CITY OF SALISBURY HONORS PETE COOPER

On Thursday, May 20, 2010 Salisbury Mayor James Ireton, Jr honored our own Pete Cooper with a ceremony as signs were unveiled that added the name Pete Cooper Way to Eastern Shore Drive.

Pete, the first Salisbury Public Works Director, was responsible for many projects including the 500,000 gallon elevated water storage tank on Edgemore Ave., construction of many roads including Riverside Drive, Eastern Shore Drive, Waverly Drive, Carroll Street, paving the Downtown  Plaza with antique style bricks, the River Walk Project, the discovery and development of Paleo Channel off Naylor Mill Road and many others

Last year Pete donated trees that were planted along Pete Cooper Way.

SENIOR VOLUNTEER RECOGNITION

On June 13, 2010 Winston Sibert received a Senior Volunteer Recognition award from the Wicomico County Commission On Aging. The theme is “Celebrate Aging” and the award is given to those active older volunteers who have “demonstrated a significant contribution to our county.”

When the staff of Mallard Landing was asked to select an individual from the community fitting this description, Winston Sibert was the first person to come to mind, having contributed over 10,000 hours of service to many organizations such as Holly Center, Dove Pointe, The MAC Center, The Ward Museum and Mallard Landing.

Winston would tell you that he is “just giving back to the county for all the county has done for his family.” He is referring to how the county offered opportunities to his family when other counties could not. The Siberts moved to Wicomico County from Prince Georges County because there were so many more services to help their daughter Becky have as much independence as possible when dealing with her physical and mental challenges.

Whatever his motivation, Winston is very modest about his volunteerism because to him it is just the right thing to do. Thank you Winston!

LAYFIELD TOWER NAMED IN HONOR
OF VIRGINIA LAYFIELD

Virginia B. Layfield, a previous resident of Mallard Landing, has the distinction of having one of Peninsula Regional Medical Centers new buildings named in her honor. The Layfield Tower will be part of PRMC's $100 million planned expansion. Mrs. Layfield also holds the distinction of being the 'First Lady' of Mallard Landing. She was an advisory board member during the development of the retirement community and in 1998 became one of its first residents.

Working from 1948 to 1991 in various capacities at what was to become Peninsula Regional Medical Center, she rose from an emergency room nurse to become president, holding that position three times. Mrs. Layfield is currently a member of the Peninsula Regional Medical Center Foundation Board of Directors.
